Nonparametric Welfare Analysis∗

چکیده
Exact consumers surplus and deadweight loss are the most widely used welfare and economic efficiency measures. These measures can be computed from demand functions in straightforward ways. Nonparametric estimation can be used to estimate the welfare measures. In doing so it seems important to account correctly for unobserved heteroeneity given the high degree of unexplained demand variation often found in applications. This paper surveys work on nonparametric welfare analysis, focusing on that which allows for general heterogeneity in demand as in Hausman and Newey (2015). JEL Classification: C10, C14, C51, C54.

A nonparametric test of stochastic dominance in multivariate distributions
The literature on statistical test of stochastic dominance has thus far been concerned with univariate distributions. This paper presents nonparametric statistical tests for multivariate distributions. This allows a nonparametric treatment of multiple welfare indicators. These test are applied to a time series of cross-section datasets on household level total expenditure and non labour market ...
متن کاملTHE NONPARAMETRIC APPROACH TO APPLIED WELFARE ANALYSIS By
Changes in total surplus and deadweight loss are traditional measures of economic welfare. We propose necessary and sufficient conditions for rationalizing consumer demand data with a quasilinear utility function. Under these conditions, consumer surplus is a valid measure of consumer welfare. For nonmarketed goods, we propose necessary and sufficient conditions on market data for efficient pro...
متن کاملNonparametric Estimation of Exact Consumers Surplus and Deadweight Loss
We apply nonparametric regression models to estimation of demand curves of the type most often used in applied research. From the demand curve estimators we derive estimates of exact consumers surplus and deadweight loss, that are the most widely used welfare and economic efficiency measures in areas of economics such as public finance. We also develop tests of the symmetry and downward sloping...
متن کاملReconsidering the Welfare Cost of Inflation in the US: A Nonparametric Estimation of the Nonlinear Long-Run Money Demand Equation using Projection Pursuit Regressions
This paper, first, estimates the appropriate, log-log or semi-log, linear long-run money demand relationship capturing the behavior US money demand over the period of 1980:Q1 to 2010:Q4, using the standard linear cointegration procedures found in the literature, and the corresponding nonparametric version of the same based on Projection Pursuit Regression (PPR) methods. We then, compare the res...
متن کاملEstimating the impact of a policy reform on welfare participation: The 2001 extension to the Minimum Income Guarantee for UK pensioners
In 2001 the Minimum Income Guarantee for UK pensioners was reformed, changing the structure and level of benefits. We evaluate the behavioural response to this reform, using nonparametric analysis of data on some pensioners interviewed before and others after the reform, using matching on simulated preand post-reform entitlements and other characteristics. We consider the effect of measurement ...
